Tuesday from the M. Oakey Son Funeral Home Chapel, Salem. BOWLES, Amanda Louise Lam, 66, of Roanoke, died Sunday, December 27, 1998, at a local hospital. She was born February 1, 1932, in Roanoke County, daughter of the late Ned Rassie Thomas and Sarah Elizabeth McCray Thomas. Mandy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

It seems everyone who met her, loved her. Her survivors include her husband, James C. Bowles; five daughters, Charlotte Hamlin and her husband, Daniel of Salem, Rachel Howell of Roanoke, Sherry Tolbert of Vinton, Rose Estes and her husband, Dwayne of Roanoke, and Vickie L. Young and her husband, Frank of Roanoke County; four sisters, Stella King and her husband Sanford of Salem, Darlene Roop and her husband, Doc of Roanoke, Dorothy Glass and her husband, Sam of Salem, Janie Jewel and her husband, Edward of Roanoke County; a brother, Billy Thomas of Roanoke; five grandchildren, Melinda Hall, Tina Horn, Brenda Hamlin, William Spradlin, and Ashley Estes; and two great-grandchildren, Timothy Lafon and Dustin Lafon. Her funeral service will be held 10 a.m.

OBITUARIES HOPPER, Rebecca Blevins, 76, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday afternoon, December 26, 1998. She was the widow of Sanford G. Hopper and is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Waller Pamplin of Roanoke; a grandson, Jeffrey of Roanoke; a grandson, Timothy and wife, Michelle of Minnetonka, a granddaughter, Elizabeth and fiance Richard Rosso of Long Island N.Y.: a great-grandson, Zachary Tyler Pamplin of Minnetonka, a special nephew, Benny Firestone and wife, Carol of Franklin County; a sister, Barbara Lee Smith and husband, Don of Roanoke and many nieces and nephews. Tuesday at the funeral home. LLOYD, Harry Griffin, 92, of Roanoke, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, December 27, 1998. He retired from Lloyd Electric Company after 47 years of service and was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Pauline Whitlock Lloyd; sisters, Mary Harris, Salem, Annie Dooley, Vinton; brother, Eddie Wayne Lloyd, Moneta; a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs.

Lloyd wishes to thank Harry's loyal and faithful caregivers, the staff of Good Samaritan Hospice, and the devoted family, friends, and neighbors for every act of kindness. He was a member of the Clearbrook Rescue Squad for over 38 years and is survived by his wife, Eileen S. Arrangements by Oakey's Chapel. North JACOBS, Wallace W. 77, of Roanoke, died SUTHERLAND, Zella 92, of Roanoke, died Friday evening, December 25, 1998. She was the daughter of the late Thurman and Ellen Sutherland; and was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Sutherland Doyle. Miss Sutherland was employed by the Red Lion Trucking Company for over 40 years and was a member of the Quota Club.

Surviving are a niece, Mary Marshall Doyle-Rastatter, Alexandria. Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside at West Hill Cemetery in Lebanon at 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 30, 1998. Tuesday. THOMPSON, Samuel Jackson, 69, of Hardy, died Monday, December 28, 1998. Arrangements by Lotz Vinton Chapel. WAUGAMAN, Cecil Witt 90, of Roanoke, died Sunday, December 27, 1998. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Elizabeth Smith Waugaman.

He was a member of Cave Spring United Methodist Church and Virginia Heights Lodge 324 A.F. A.M. He was retired from Norfolk and Western Railway after 48 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Lucile L. Waugaman; a son and daughter-in-law, C.W.

Waugaman Jr. and wife Linda; granddaughter, Sheila Feltis and husband John; grandson, Travas Waugaman; two stepsons, John D. Booth, Jack L. Booth and wife Sandy; stepgrandaughter, Joyelle Tilton and husband Chad; a stepgreat-granddaughter, Brianna Tilton. Services will be at Oakey's South Chapel 11 a.m.

WORTHEY, William Capers 86, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, December 26, 1998. He was born in Chester County, S.C., to the late Arthur and Lillie Lann Worthey.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War Il. Mr. Worthey retired from Railroad. Survivors include his wife, Hattie Worthey; two sons, William (Shirley) Worthey Jr. of Alexandria, Leon G.

(Alice Worthey, Fort Washington, one sister, Bernitha Watson of New York; five grandchildren, Jerome and Tracy Worthey of Alexandria, Gary and Chris Worthey of McClean, and Tracy W. Bray of Dover, six great-grandchildren; a devoted nephew, James R. (Viola) Clark of Ettrick; other nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Thursday, 11 a.m., at Sweet Union Baptist Church. Dr.

She was born in Bedford County on September 7, 1906, a daughter of the late Willie Fletcher Phillips and Ella May Orange Phillips. She was a member of Bedford Christian Church and was preceded in death by her husbands, Elmer Herman Ruff, Carl A. Sarver, and Garnett H. Rodgers, and her daughter, Louise Ruff Agee. She is survived by a daughter, Rosemary R.

Parker of Thaxton; two sons, Billy H. Ruff of Johnstown, Ohio and Burks E. Ruff of Columbus, Ohio; three sisters, Ola P. Orange of Bedford, Gladys P. McKinney of Montvale, and Elsie Phillips of Columbus, Ohio; two half sisters, Cora Woodford of Bedford, and Elizabeth Kinzley of Lynchburg; also numerous grandchildren, including John A.

Ruff, with whom she made her home, and Sue Agee, both of Bedford; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday, December 30, 1998, at Bedford Christian Church with the Rev. James E. Compton Jr.

ford, passed away Saturday, December 26, 1998 in Eldercare of Franklin County. She was born July 2, 1912 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Theodore Burnette and Fannie Sprouse Burnette. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank H. Gordon, and a grandson, Mack Allen Musgrove. She was a member of the Bedford Baptist Church.

She is survived by a son, Frank H. Gordon, Bedford; a daughter, Patricia G. Recknor, Bedford; a sister, Hattie Overstreet, Bedford; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, January 1, 1998 at 10 a.m. from the Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford.

Interment will follow in the Virginia Memorial Park. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elsie Richie; daughter, Brenda Robinson; granddaughter, Veronica Robinson; great-grandchild, Derrick Robinson; godchild, Tiffany Harris, all of Bedford, three sisters, Goldie Goode and Ludie Goode, both of Lynchburg, and Florence Hardy, Roanoke; three brothers, Trent Richie and Tom Richie, both of Lynchburg, and Levi Richie, Bedford; and a host of other relatives and friends. New River Valley JONES, Mabel White Jor- dan, 76, of 224 Carriage Hill Pulaski, died Sunday morning, December 27, 1998 at her home. Born July 1, 1922 in Pulaski, she was the daughter of the late Cynthia Hines White and Allen White.

Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by one sister, Aleene Vaughan and one step-son, Edwin P. Jones. She was a bookkeeper at Cavalier Supply in Pulaski for many years. She is survived by her husband, Norman P.

"Doggie" Jones; one son, David Keith Jordan of Louisiana; one stepClyde D. Jones of Littleton, one step-daughter, Steve "Laline Davis" Smith of Longmont, eight step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren. Arritt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangments. DUFF, Myrtle Martin, 87, of Glasgow, died Monday, December 28, 1998 in the Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Mrs. Duff was born in Collington, S. C.

on April 17, 1911, and was a daughter of the late Henry Dowling Martin and Harriet Ann Rebecca Brant Martin. She was a member of the Faith Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by her husband, Omer Joshua "Pete" Duff; a daughter, Virlee Louise Duff Tomlin; and a son, Homer Oliver Duff. Mrs. Duff is survived by five children, Wayne Lee Duff, Buena Vista, Henry William Duff, Waynesboro, Betty Ann Radford, Buchanan, Leonard Ray Duff, Big Island, Bobby Lee Duff, Buena Vista; two brothers, Julian Smith Martin, Charleston, S. He was born on November 23, 1920 in Roanoke. He was owner of Davis Jewelers Supply Company for over 30 years and has been a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church since 1930.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Maxine Farmer 1 Davis of Salem; a son, William H. Davis, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Virginia Davis of Lynchburg; a daughter, Patricia Davis Pritchard and son-in-law, Dennie W. Pritchard of Midlothian; four grandchildren, Kerri and Robin Pritchard, Justin and Molly Davis; one brother, Warren W. Davis of Roanoke; stepsister, Ruth Crossman.

Galax, passed away Sunday, December 27, 1998. Surviving are her husband, Ralph Funk, Galax; daughter, Lindsay A. Funk, Galax; son, Chadlee G. Funk, Galax; mother, Delta Burcham, Woodlawn; brothers and sisters-in-law, Roger Burcham, Galax, Perry, and Beverly Burcham, Woodlawn; three nieces; four nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Orbon Burcham and sister, Joyce Carico.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Galax Pentecostal Holiness Church, Galax, with interment in the Crooked Creek Cemetery. Family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home, Galax. Flowers will be appreciated or contributions may be made to the Pipers Gap Rescue Squad.

GLASS, Lloyd, 77, of Java, died Monday, December 28, 1998. Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements. Martinsville, died Sunday, December 20, 1998, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. Born in Montgomery County on August 7, 1910, to Malinda Weddle and I. L.

Epperly, she was raised in Floyd County where her father was superintendent of schools. She graduated from Averett College and Westhampton College majoring in history and mathematics. She taught school in Floyd and in Martinsville. She and the late S. L.

Goodman came to Martinsville when he purchased the then weekly local newspaper, THE BULLETIN. Preceded in death by her daughters, Linda Lewis and Nancy Goodman, she is survived by one daughter, Dorothy Lewis (Mrs. D.H.) of Martinsville; one sister Carrie Witt Cabell of Richmond; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A long time supporter of the arts, Mrs. Goodman worked on the Docent Guild of Piedmont Arts Association and worked for many years on the Civic Music Association.

She has been an active member of the General Joseph Martin Chapter of the DAR, serving as Regent in 1945. She served as president and secretary of the Mildred Lee Chapter of the UDC and has been a district chair. One of the original telephone workers for the local Contact, she answered the very first call made to them. She was a member of the Beaver Creek Garden Club. For 60 years a member of the Current, Events Club, Mrs.

Goodman held all offices, currently as parliamentarian. A lifelong Baptist, Mrs. Goodman was a 60 year member of First Baptist of Martinsville. She taught Sunday school for more than 40 years, currently in the Olivia Keesee Class, was several times president of the Woman's Missionary Organization, and for 20 years served as clerk of the Henry County Baptist Association. Serving on the staff of the Sue Martin McCabe Library, she organized a mending committee teaching the repair and preservation of books and Bibles.

A memorial service was held at First Baptist at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, 1998. Family at the Lewis home, 1245 Sam Lions Trail. Memorials may be made to Contact and to Sue Martin McCabe Library of First Baptist. HORTON, Betty Midkiff, 89, of Hillsville, passed away Monday, December 28, 1998, at Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax.

Surviving are two daughters and son-in-law, Cloatine and Bobby Henley of Hillsville, Marie Horton Worrell of" Knoxville, one son, D. L. Horton Jr. of Hillsville; one brother, Floyd Midkiff of Hillsville; five grandsons, Rev. David Terry Horton, Timothy Horton, Donnie Horton, Randy Horton; one granddaughter, Bobbie Jo Henley; eight great-grandchildren.

Graveside service and burial will be held Wednesday, December 30, 1998, at 2 p.m. in Webb Skyview Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
