was born December 19 1912 in Bedford County a daughter of the late William Albert Overstreet and Mary Milton Overstreet She was preceded in death by her husband Moulton Andrew Mayhew two sons William Mayhew and Elwood Mayhew three sisters Dorothy Sumner Grade Gillaspie and Lizzie Williams four brothers Woodrow Overstreet Joe Overstreet Odell Overstreet and red Overstreet She was a retired employee of the Moneta Dress actory and was a member of the Quaker Baptist Church She is survived by four sons Lewis Mayhew Clarence Ray Mayhew Mahlon Mayhew and Douglas Mayhew all of Bedford five daughters Virginia Susin Annie Mae Brock both of Birmingham Ala Nancy Walker Iva Martin both of Bedford Mary Hodges Union Hall three sisters Thelma Mayhew Ellen Ayers both of Bedford Ruby Martin Roanoke a from Jefferson High and worked in the Railroad offices until World War II when she went to Norfolk to work the busy phones as an operator during the war Gaphred married her sailor after the war and is survived by her sister Geraleen Jones Grindle and husband Bing of Roanoke five children Richard Evans and wife Bonnie of Roanoke Cynthia itzgerald and husband Ed of Virginia Beach Bob Evans of Duck NC Reese Evans and wife Debbie of Kitty Hawk NC and Jonathan Evans of Norfolk Also surviving are grandchildren Kim Reese of Poplar Branch NC Chris Evans of Dania la Melissa Stevens of Virginia Beach her red haired special Sarah Gaphred earned two college degrees from TCC in 1985 She enjoyed working and reluctantly retired from the City of Virginia Beach at the age of 74 She enjoyed over 2000 hours volunteering at the Marine Science Museum She was recognized as one of the most active volunteers in the City of Virginia Beach She has helped support several overseas missionaries and was always there for her friends Gaphred was a rock for her family and a pillar in her church but they had to share her passion with the General ederation of Woman's Clubs Her involvement began with Brambleton Jr Woman's Club in Roanoke in 1952 where she was past president and continued with Cape Henry Woman's Club as past president (1971 1973) and a life member She will be remembered and missed Jamaica Neville Willoughby a respect ed Jamaican radio broadcaster known for his interviews with reggae legend Bob Marley has died He was 69 Willoughby died at the Uni versity of the West Indies Hos pital from injuries sustained in a car accident Tuesday night in the capital of Kingston said Gary Allen managing director at Radio Jamaica Willoughby had worked at the station since 1969 He was a prominent figure in music scene and recorded a reggae Christmas song He is best known for a lengthy 1973 interview with Marley that has been released as a separate recording and is considered one of the most in depth discussions with the star Willoughby is survived by two daughters Associated Press Anthony fine tuned Pentagon budgeting The Boston Globe At the behest of Robert McNamara his longtime friend Robert Anthony set aside scholarly pursuits at Harvard Business School in the mid 1960s to take a key role reshaping the bud get process for the Defense Department was an absolutely outstanding professor at the Harvard Business School" said McNamara secretary of defense under John Ken nedy and Lyndon Johnson owed a lot to him for what we did together at the busi ness school but also I owed him even more when he came down at my request to serve with me in the Defense Department He was an extraordinarily able rom creating compatible accounting systems for the branches of the military to trimming wasteful requests from budget proposals through his sharp examina tion Anthony left a legacy that lasted beyond his three years in the Defense Depart ment McNamara said showed that the bud get proposals of the secre taries of the services air ground and sea could be analyzed and that they could be analyzed in terms that the secretary of defense could accept or McNamara said a result the presi dent was in a much better position to determine what was appropriate for defense expenditures which even at that time were Anthony a prolific writer who brought clar ity to accounting textbooks died Dec 1 in the Kendal at Hanover continuing care community in Hanover NH after a period of failing health He was 90 Out of State New River Valley Stille.
